Silent Hill Shattered Memories is a Sony PlayStation Portable Action game, written by Climax Group.

Guide to Silent Hill Shattered Memories on the PSP

Silent Hill Shattered Memories is well beyond a rehash of the franchise as this supposed re-imagining of the original release from the franchise will once again have gamers go through a nightmare of an experience on their handheld system. Konami's very own survival horror franchise first stepped foot onto the original PlayStation way back in 1999, which means that this franchise has been providing horror fans with a cerebral level of horror that is more disturbing than cheap scare and thrills for ten years now. More accurately categorized as a psychological horror, Silent Hill Shattered Memories messes with your own mind, which is your true opponent in this game more than those ominous looking enemies in the game as you fight your way through survival in this game world.

The original release from the franchise truly paved the way for a burgeoning of a groundbreaking horror formula that is continued on with Silent Hill Shattered Memories. Climax Studios was tapped by Konami to develop this game and the former is no longer new to the franchise since it was also responsible for developing Silent Hill Origins on the PSP. And with Silent Hill Shattered Memories, the developer wanted to go back to the franchise's roots by revamping the original game that was released on the PS2. It also offered the perfect opportunity for Climax to iron out elements from the original game and re-envision the game's basic underpinnings.

For those who have not played the original Silent Hill game, you will be taking on the role of Harry Mason. He is a father searching for his lost daughter until it leads him up to a mysterious town known only as Silent Hill. At its core, this appear to be a straightforward story that can be taken on in the same manner. Not until you get to explore the deep recesses of this town, which seems to emit this freaky sensation and filled with eerie shadows. Needless to say, Climax Studios is using the original storyline as the basic framework that will catapult the chilling experience in Silent Hill Shattered Memories. This promises to be an entirely new adventure such that even those who had played the original game should be in for a great surprise – an awkwardly pleasant one at that.

To make the experience unique, Silent Hill Shattered Memories have been infused with subtle but relevant refinements. However, the developers at Climax Studios veered away from superficial enhancements such as polishing the controls or updating the graphics, especially given that this is a look back onto the incipient release for the franchise. Much of the development emphasized heavily on delivering a unique horror experience that is suited to each gamer's individual playing style. Therefore, each playing experience for individual gamers is unique from the others in Silent Hill Shattered Memories.

Aside from introducing new characters, Silent Hill Shattered Memories offers new situations that will have you tackle unique challenges in a manner that is unorthodox of typical survival horror games. The way you decide to play this game and your ability to interact with the environment will produce its consequential impact on the response of the game. Meaning, it will determine what areas will open up for you to explore, the characters you meet, and the puzzles that you'd have to solve throughout your adventure in Silent Hills Shattered Memories. Therefore, it really feels like you're the one in control instead of being forced to take certain paths in the game.

Speaking of interaction, this has also been greatly improved in Silent Hill Shattered Memories to favor full immersion into the game world. The health gauge has been eliminated and the amount of text prompts for object interaction has been significantly reduced. As a change, Harry will speak to nearby objects of interest automatically. And zooming into any interactive object found in the game is possible with the use of the face buttons and the analog stick.

Puzzles are another significant element into the franchise and with survival horror genre as a whole. Thus, the puzzles found in Silent Hill Shattered Memories have been redesigned to increase interactivity while reducing backtracking. You could therefore utilize whatever objects you find in the game for clues that will help you figure out the puzzle. For instance, you can open doors to find new objects, turn the dials, or go to a security monitor and interact with it. There is undeniably more focus on puzzle-solving with Silent Hill Shattered Memories more than any other iterations from the franchise.

The psychological scare element is another major emphasis in Silent Hill Shattered Memories, which is something that no other horror titles have achieved with much success. You can now get rid of those cheap scare elements and Climax Studios insist on using unsettling images or scenarios, that will unnerve the gamer instead of startling them. In fact, the game starts with a word of warning that clearly states: “as you're playing the game, the game is playing you.” In the game's context, what this basically means is that the elements of gameplay for Silent Hill Shattered Memories are aimed to fight back at you.

In addition, Harry Mason was designed to be an “everyman” character that is unlike the characters in Alone in the Dark or Resident Evil that is equipped with superhero abilities and modern weaponry. In fact, there are no weapons in Silent Hill Shattered Memories. You can use whatever interactive objects you can find to fend off an enemy, a flare to scare them off, or run away for escape. In case the enemy catches up to you, rapid button presses can be effective in flinging them off for Harry to stay alive. The lack of direct combat elements in Silent Hill Shattered Memories might put off hardcore combat fanatics, it promotes dynamic interactivity in the game world, such that it reinforces the immersion efforts for this game. It also shifts the focus away from trying to beat the enemy, as more of an attempt for survival, which is a truly raw experience.

Given that the franchise has been around for a while now, there is a lot of graphical improvement in Silent Hill Shattered Memories. It now contains a much sharper, detailed, and realistic look to it. Both characters and enemies are highly detailed, while the atmospheric lighting contributes to the spooky feeling that the game world emits. It doesn't hurt that the game runs smoothly either, which is a reliable feature during chase sequences and other fast paced actions. For the gamers of the original, you will surely enjoy the audio for Silent Hill Shattered Memories. Original composer Akira Yamaoka is back with a new musical score for this one.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories offer some great elements to the franchise, while also promising to revisit the game that started off this survival horror supremacy. And while the game has been technically much improved, it has successfully brought back the same creepy gameplay that will scare your wits off.
