Blazblue Calamity Trigger Portable is a Sony PlayStation Portable Fighting game, written by Arc System Works.

Guide to Blazblue Calamity Trigger Portable on the PSP

BlazBlue Calamity Trigger first made headlines on the PS3 when it released summer of last year and ArcSystem Works earned several nods from game critics for its standout development. However, the franchise segues into another breakthrough as a portable version has been unveiled for the Sony PSP. The PS3 version was one of the most defining 2D fighters in recent years and BlazBlue Calamity Trigger for the PSP is letting handheld gamers experience this fighting craze. Critics might lash on this game for its similarities with the Guilty Gear franchise, but it somehow managed to establish its own unique approach to 2D fighting that won over its fans.

The release of the portable version now offers fans the ability to enjoy BlazBlue Calamity Trigger on the go. Those who haven't tried playing the PS3 version though will be in for some real treat. If the console version were any indication of the quality of gameplay that this portable title will be bringing, then expect to spend a great deal of playing time with your Sony PSP on BlazBlue Calamity Trigger. And you can also heave a sigh of relief as the developers at ArcSystem Works have managed to overcome the hurdle of moving a game into a less powerful platform since this one runs and plays smoothly from start to finish.

One of the most basic question in gamers' minds when it comes to porting a game into another console is the similarities and differences. Although it would have been an easy route for ArcSystem Works to take by porting over the exact same game in BlazBlue Calamity Trigger to the PSP, they tried to make the game seem a little unique from the original. Of course, most of the features in the portable BlazBlue Calamity Trigger are extracted from the main game but you can also expect some new ones, thus adding more treat for PSP gamers.

Onto the gameplay, which is at the heart of any game, BlazBlue Calamity Trigger for the PSP retains that fluid playing experience that was present in the original 2D fighter. There is a certain degree of distinction that was present in this game's fighting system that was unique, albeit comparisons with the Guilty Gear franchise. Most of the characters in the roster, moves, and modes featured in the original were kept intact in this BlazBlue Calamity Trigger port. To sum it up, and we'd be discussing more of it below, the overall gameplay is impressive here.

BlazBlue Calamity Trigger offers 12 character choices in the roster and like the PS3 version, each one offer diversity not just in terms of their personal appearances, but also in their individual personalities. Thus, each type of gamer will have a likely pick, regardless of your own playing style. The character roster in PSP's BlazBlue Calamity Trigger also include a lot of weapon fighters, while being equipped with powerful attacks and moves. Aside from the usual choices of Rachel, Hakumen, V-13, or Ragna, you can also pick out wickedly explosive Tager or sample Taokaka's lightning-fast speed. The backstories for each character are also well-implemented into the game, thus drawing out additional source of motivation to increase the level of fighting intensity some more. And to cap it off, you can get an “Unlimited” version for each character in the roster.

The fighting system remains to be the highlight for BlazBlue Calamity Trigger for the PSP. In this game, you have the unique opportunity to continue on with your combos while your enemy is in down state to effectively decimate them for a knockout. On the defensive aspect though, BlazBlue Calamity Trigger offers you variant choices for getting back up if you are on the other end of the spectrum. Thus, you can regain your health bar and prevent being pummeled into the ground with a series of combo attacks. An interesting feature in the fighting system for BlazBlue Calamity Trigger, which adds more complexity and make things more interesting is the Drive Attack.

Each character is equipped with a specific Drive Attack that is unique only to them. And depending on what character you choose to play as, it will produce different consequence to an ongoing battle. It could either involve direct manipulation of various forms of natural element or absorbing the life-force off your opponent to quickly knock them out. With this system, BlazBlue Calamity Trigger takes the distinct character abilities to another level and depending on how you use it could serve you a major advantage during each combat sequence. Drive Attacks in BlazBlue Calamity Trigger are not extremely powerful though such as to bring the game into your favor. Instead, you need to carefully integrate it into your timed attacks or combos for maximum efficiency.

The portable version for BlazBlue Calamity Trigger brings back some of the familiar modes from the PS3 version into this one. Among those returning modes include Versus, Training, Arcade, Score Attack, and Story. But there are two distinct modes added into the all-new portable BlazBlue Calamity Trigger: Legion and Shop Modes.

In the all-new Shop Mode, you can use in-game currency and head on over to the new shop where you can spend them. Hence, you can unlock the “Unlimited” form of fighters, art, and illustrations in BlazBlue Calamity Trigger via this new shop. As for Legion Mode, it is like a gauntlet wherein you must face your opponents and when you defeat them, they will automatically join you. BlazBlue Calamity Trigger's Legion Mode allocates one unit of land for each character on the game board. Your goal is to move from one area to the next, fighting a group of enemies on the way, and then expanding your turf. You can invite up to 20 members to join your party and you can all connive to conquer the entire map.

Sadly though, the multiplayer component for BlazBlue Calamity Trigger on the PSP lacks the infrastructure mode. With only local Ad-Hoc multiplayer option available, only two gamers are allowed to battle it out against each other for a multiplayer match. A total of four players are allowed into a single room though, but the others will have to spectate as two others engage in intense fight.

As is expected with the difference in platform capacity, the PSP version of BlazBlue Calamity Trigger had its share of visual and audio sacrifices. Although the game still merits comparison with Guilty Gear with its visual style, the vibrant graphics and character sprites help establish distinction. And even with the less powerful PSP, BlazBlue Calamity Trigger remains to be a visual marvel. The audio department was understandably reduced in quality but it did little to hurt the game's overall performance, technically speaking.

As the well loved franchise debuts on the PSP via BlazBlue Calamity Trigger, handheld gamers will get the opportunity to experience this frantic action while on the go. And before long, you should experience a serious kick with this compelling 2D fighter as it finds a new home on the PSP.
