Steambot Chronicles is a Sony PlayStation Portable Fighting Action game, written by Irem.

Guide to Steambot Chronicles on the PSP

Steambot Chronicles is a smaller, more compact take on the original game that was initially released on the PS2. That version, however, can be considered as a hidden gem for it never really got the exposure it deserved and was one of the underrated games on the system, if not for the entire gaming community. What the developers basically aimed to do with the PSP version of Steambot Chronicles is basically to create a budding franchise that will provide a similar experience as with the original franchise release but offer more options for the gamer.

Steambot Chronicles has a few hits and misses though, but if you get the opportunity to take a close glimpse into the game, it certainly has the potential of becoming one of the greatest additions into Sony's handheld system this year. First off, Steambot Chronicles is set in Orion City, which is home to the world's largest producers of Trotmobiles. This is also where the Trotmobile Gladiator Championship will be held, which is something that gamers of Steambot Chronicles will be participating in. Overall, the game world featured in the PSP version of Steambot Chronicles is the same in the PS2 but it features an entirely new story for you to follow.

Moving over to the story, Steambot Chronicles allow gamers to play as the up-and-coming Trotmobile driver which is aiming for the championship. However, it won't be an easy ride. Good thing though that you'd be teamed up with another feisty and up-and-coming mech, named Venus, will be joining your team's effort to win the championship. In order to reach your goal, you will have to take on jobs that will allow you to follow the basic storyline in Steambot Chronicles. All of these efforts eventually come up together where revelations are made in the end. However, you are also given the liberty to explore on missions and other type of adventures in Steambot Chronicles without being tied up to the main plot.

Upon first examination, Steambot Chronicles can be easily thought of as a sandbox game. However, it does follow a tight structure wherein Orion City serves as a hub where you can find jobs for you to take on. These jobs are quite challenging as well as you'd have to take on different steps that lead up to the completion of your job until you are awarded with either fame or money. Speaking of award, Steambot Chronicles feature an efficient reward system that motivate gamers enough to take on these jobs or compete in tournaments.

The fame reward is an important requirement so you can compete in the coliseum. There are ranks (ranging from A to D) assigned for each opponent and you must meet a certain fame or cash before you can take on a given opponent. Whenever you successfully defeat a particular opponent of a given rank, you can find new missions and jobs to take on. Another interesting reward for beating your opponents are parts that you can use to beef up your Trotmobile in Steambot Chronicles.

Going back to Orion City, it does offer enough areas and environments to explore for gamers of Steambot Chronicles. There are three main areas available in the game, which you must visit to accomplish your various jobs. Each of these areas have their own corresponding sub-areas that require certain tasks to be completed. The majority of these missions are unique but others will reappear at some point in Steambot Chronicles.

One of the strongest points of Steambot Chronicles is its customization feature. It adds up to the entire experience that you can get from the game. Gamers have to buy new and improved parts for their Trotmobile to upgrade your vehicle's performance so you can also compete at the top of your game in the coliseum. For every new part you acquire, you are only allowed a certain amount of upgrade. With this in mind you'll have to use a bit of strategy with the upgrade system in Steambot Chronicles. You need to properly assess where you spend your money and what attributes will be most beneficial for your Trotmobile.

The battle system and the tournament is the heart of Steambot Chronicles. They serve the gist of the entire playing experience and it is therefore important to assess the control system. First off, the game interface is not perfect but it does work. The same can be said of the control system, which allows you to attack using either arms for weapons, dodge oncoming attacks, or jump. Attacks are assigned to specific arm such that you can perform dashes or strafes with ease. Plus, it helps that interactive materials are available in the arena such that you can use them as weapons, if you lack any. The overall control setup is easy to comprehend and you can certainly grasp the concept without requiring a learning curve in Steambot Chronicles.

For added excitement, Steambot Chronicles also feature a multiplayer feature, which rewards you for befriending other PSP gamers. There is only an Ad-hoc multiplayer option, however, that supports up to four players in total. The gamesharing ability means that each one of you no longer have to purchase separate copies of the game and you can do with only one having a copy to ensure that you can all participate in this gaming adventure.

The visual design in Steambot Chronicles render the game in a simple art style that features clipart-style graphics and cel-shaded appearance. One flaw in the visual design, however, comes in the form of the citizens of Orion City. Except for a few, they basically look like clones of each other which is highly noticeable as you roam around the city in an effort to complete jobs. The city is quite restrictive in size as well. As for the audio department, the voice acting did a great job in redeeming the game for any lapses it has in the visual aspect of Steambot Chronicles.

Steambot Chronicles for the PSP offer a huge potential to deliver a compelling gaming experience. Sadly though, the game runs for just a few short hours that sometimes you'd feel like the game has ended before you even got to experience a feel of the game. But with the variety of missions and customized features, Steambot Chronicles for the PSP does offer a fairly entertaining experience, which is something that fans of the original game will find a treat.

Steambot Chronicles Game Features

You control your adventure - Mission-based gameplay puts you in the driver's seat: you choose what you do and say. Take on missions ranging from cross-town delivery to mining in a canyon to defeating bandits. The money and fame points earned can be used to upgrade your Trotmobile and enter arena battles.

Complete freedom to build - The cardinal rule of Trotmobile design is that there is no ideal design. Instead, there are tons of options to change out arms, legs, heads, bodies, and more that change the nature of how you battle! Then, personalize your vehicle with color and emblem to make it distinctively yours.

Four-player competition mode - Clash with your friends' Trotmobiles in 4 player ad hoc multiplayer! Set each player against the others battle royale style, or pair up for tag team action.

One UMD, four players - Only one UMD disc? You can still compete! Activate "game sharing" to enter multiplayer mode with standard Trotmobiles, or use multiple UMDs to have access to your customized battle vehicles!
