Guide to Soul Calibur Broken Destiny on the PSP

Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny brings this top-tier fighting franchise into the handheld system to provide PSP gamers another fighting game to dwell their time on. Since the first release from the franchise came out 10 years ago, the developers have seen this franchise evolved but has mostly found its home around the home consoles. This is a milestone for the franchise to release Soul Calibur Broken Destiny for the handheld device but they are certainly cutting corners to accommodate the game in a modest horsepower.

Namco Bandai's fighting series is one epitome of a game that was able to surpass the arcade and establish a fighting game that took on the essential dynamics of what comprises an effective game. If you've had the opportunity to get a glimpse of Soul Calibur Broken Destiny, then it shouldn't be much of a surprise how this handheld version has been able to depict the same visual success. But wait until you get to check out the gameplay for Soul Calibur Broken Destiny f- its packed with essential features that will give even Tekken 6 a run for its money.

The story for Soul Calibur Broken Destiny is basically set up to provide continuation into the events of Soul Calibur IV, but developers promise this new title is not a direct port. The story will only serve as a backdrop for all the fighting action and there's certainly more in store for fans around here. As you start playing the game, you will be introduced by a cinematic that already showcases the action, serving to provide a glimpse of what's in store for Soul Calibur Broken Destiny as soon as the action kicks off.

As with previous entries, Soul Calibur Broken Destiny features a fast paced action that is nonetheless smooth and equally fun. This was all due to the use of a heavily modified game engine from that was used in its predecessor and the result of these changes were quite pleasing, to say the least. The robust character creation feature in Soul Calibur Broken Destiny makes a return but with additional parts and accessories to be unlocked. You will be able to use them during play and must try to explore its full capacity in the portable edition.

The fighter roster is probably the major source of attention in Soul Calibur Broken Destiny. Loyal fans of the franchise should be pleased to know that majority of your favorites are packed with as many as 30 fighters to choose from, giving you plenty of choices. But if the returning fighters are not enough, the developers decided to toss in a couple new additions to beef up the lineup even more – Kratos and Dampierre.

You're probably familiar with what Kratos has done in God of War and he will bring the same level of fierceness to Soul Calibur Broken Destiny. His iconic weapons will also be making an appearance in this game to complete his ensemble. Aside from that, he can pull of God-like moves that do a lot of damage to his opponents. With pretty thorough attacks in varying ranges, at some point you do get this feeling that Kratos might be a tad bit overpowered. On the other hand, there's Dampierre that also adds a lot of peculiarity into the lineup of Soul Calibur Broken Destiny. He is in a lot of sense your typical villain and is the kind of character you'd most likely want to use in close-quarter combat whose very capable of throwing off opponents and blade-wielding at all times.

For the game modes in Soul Calibur Broken Destiny, you can expect most of the standard modes previously available in the series. However, a few modes from the previous entries were dropped to provide more focus into this game and leaving you with mostly modes for single-player experience. But still, there is a nice assortment of modes to choose from whether you want to play by yourself or bring over a friend in a face-to-face ad-hoc play.

First things first, there is a Quick Match feature available in Soul Calibur Broken Destiny. This mode enables you to choose an opponent from the pool of characters available as created by the development team to see whose got better fighting skills. Then, there's the Gauntlet mode that is basically a story mode divided into smaller chapters that will have you compete in a handful of mini-fights. This will provide a nice change of pace from the full-on and intense fighting that is to be experienced in Soul Calibur Broken Destiny. Plus, it helps that the story mode comes with a tutorial so you can fully immerse yourself into the fighting system and become familiarized with it.

There is also the innovative Trials Mode wherein you have to undergo three different trials, each meant to test three important skills in Soul Calibur Broken Destiny. These three trials are as follows: trials of attack, trials of defense, and endless trial. The first two tests are intended to improve your ability of clearing fights, while the third one enables you to handle a never ending horde of enemies in Soul Calibur Broken Destiny.

The Training Mode will also help you get started before embarking on the Story mode such that you will gain all the essential skills that will make you effective in combat. The battles in Training Mode will pit you against computer-controlled opponents, however. The Versus mode, meanwhile, incorporates the multiplayer aspect where you and another friend can go head-to-head in your fighting.

For fans of the series who were worried that the switch to the handheld device would place restrictions on the control system, then be pleased to hear that there are no problems for Soul Calibur Broken Destiny. It sticks with the four-button system that loyal gamers of the franchise are familiar with. Three of those buttons are dedicated for three different types of attacks – horizontal, vertical, and kick. The rest is intended for guarding yourself against special moves or combos that your opponent might execute against you in Soul Calibur Broken Destiny.

Turning over to the multiplayer, it is a bit sad to hear that Soul Calibur Broken Destiny does not feature online play. It would have been a great prospect to meet other gamers online and engage in a more intensive combat. However, there is a multiplayer ad-hoc option that allows two PSP gamers to square off in this game for the first time.

Another major concern for most gamers in bringing Soul Calibur Broken Destiny was in terms of the technical aspect of the game. Soul Calibur is a visually brilliant franchise and while it has noticeably last a few visual appeal on the PSP, it did manage to produce amazing light and shading effects. Even the character models and the backgrounds were impressive and the action wasn't compromised either. This technical success goes even further with quality voice works and soundtrack the corresponds quite well to the on-screen action.

Although it was 10 years in the making, the arrival of Soul Calibur Broken Destiny on the PSP marks the very first time that the franchise goes out of its comfort zone – the home consoles. And with this brave move and successful execution from the developers, fans will surely take notice.
