Shadow Of Destiny is a Sony PlayStation Portable Strategy RPG game, written by Konami.

Guide to Shadow Of Destiny on the PSP

Shadow of Destiny is a prized franchise for Konami since it was one of those games, alongside Silent Hill, that established a new standard for horror titles in the industry. When most people were demanding for a sequel to the breakthrough Silent Hill game, another team of developers were hard at work on a mysterious game that appeared a lot similar but played quite differently than this horror franchise. It was in 2001 that this mysterious title was unveiled to the public and made its debut entry onto the PlayStation 2. Nearly ten years later, who would have thought that Konami would ever think about resurrecting Shadow of Destiny (titled Shadow of Memories in Japan) and releasing the remake version onto Sony's handheld system. Same classic game, entirely new platform. With that, you can guarantee that same intensity in murder mystery that haunted a lot of PS2 gamers in the past.

It is therefore important to set right off the bat that Shadow of Destiny for the PSP is exactly the same game that was released back in 2001. Not really fit into the horror category, Konami would like to categorize it more as an innovative time travel adventure that features a 22-year old young man named Eike Kusch as its main protagonist. The game is set in this fictional European town wherein Eike's adventure will unfold. The game will span over 500 years due to the time travel abilities given to him by the supernatural powers that would serve as an outside hand that intervenes in the progression of the events in Shadow of Destiny. During the opening sequences for the game, gamers will witness Eike walk out of a cafe and navigate the quiet streets of the town alone, until someone mysteriously stabs him in the back, leaving him to die. This will automatically trigger a cutscene that introduces Eike into the supernatural power that intervenes with his death and gives him a second shot at life – as well as in changing his fate. That is what the core of Shadow of Destiny's story is about.

Since Eike's murderer is keen to send him to his eventual fate, which is death, you need to travel back in time in Shadow of Destiny to address the root of the problem and alter your fate. However, all of the clues to these mysterious events will glue together one by one and the only way for Eike to figure them out is to go through each scenario using his time-traveling device known as the Z-Pad, which the mysterious voice has given him at the opening sequence of the game. After his conversation with Homunculus – the mysterious voice – he is brought back to 30 minutes before his death and he is given the opportunity to reverse his fate in Shadow of Destiny.

Given the basics of the plot for Shadow of Destiny, you can expect no real action elements in the game. The only physical action involved here would be walking, running, watching, and listening. All of these are vital in cracking the clues to this mystery about Eike's death and survival. You can expect to be constantly on the run in the game though since each chapter has a time limit and the fortune teller will reveal to you the fated hour, wherein you must keep yourself protected against your murderer. The overall pace in Shadow of Destiny is slow though, and new gamers will find the story confusing at the start. However, once you are able to grasp what the story is about, you will soon realize that this is probably one of the most engaging and deep storylines ever written for a video game.

Your interaction with other characters in Shadow of Destiny is another crucial element that helps to forge the game ahead. You will meet key characters throughout your journey that will help unlock the mystery of your past and present. You can use your Z-pad to travel to certain eras but you need Energy Units to use the time traveling device and for it to respond in the game. No problem though as these Energy Units are scattered all throughout town, which is represented by green glowing balls you must collect. There are contextual triggers found in the world of Shadow of Destiny that activates response from the device. The ability to travel through time is actually more complex than you think, such that you must learn how to take advantage of the ability to go back to the past. For instance, you can prevent your own death by going back in time and stop a tree from being planted, since it served as the hiding place for your murderer.

With a total of 10 chapters in Shadow of Destiny, you will need to survive each stage without dying or in an effort to evade your murderer. There is also a prologue and epilogue featured in the game, for a bit of background on the story and to wrap it all up. For each chapter in Shadow of Destiny, Eike will have to go back in time to get a chance to go back from his death, provided that he dies in the present day and not during the earlier eras for he will not be able to go back again to the present time. The need to survive in the “fated hour” gives Shadow of Destiny a sense of urgency, which boosts the level of excitement further as you progress deeper into the game.

As with most thrilling action games, Shadow of Destiny also involves a puzzle element. You will encounter various Time Warp Puzzles all throughout the game and they all provide gamers with clues to solving the mysterious murder. Without any form of violence or intense combat, Shadow of Destiny relies on dialogue and an inventory-based puzzle to propel it forward. It is all about a series of preventing your death in every chapter as new threads come out and showing you more and more paths to take. Given all these different elements that arise from the unraveling of the mysteries in Shadow of Destiny for a more effective game progression.

Visually, gamers of Shadow of Destiny are treated to real-time animation during its opening sequence. It might even appear for some as pre-renders, instead of polygon animations. It has earned its authentic feel that is quite distinct from all other video games in the market today. And with a revision for the PSP model from the original that was released more or less 9 years ago, such that the visual looks more solid and comes with vibrant details. Even the level of character detail is something worth of mention such that each one look different from all the other characters in the game.

On the audio aspect for Shadow of Destiny, the highlight for the game is the voice acting. With a game that relies a lot on the dialogue, it was a make-or-break feature. The sound effects and background music also help to suffice for other minor audio issues that are prevalent in the game.

Ready to take on the captivating storyline that intrigued a lot of PS2 gamers in the past? Shadow of Destiny will once again infect modern gamers with its gripping plot that will provide you with multiple endings and ensure that each playthrough is just as exciting as the first one.
