Resistance Retribution is a Sony PlayStation Portable Action Shooter game, written by Sony Bend.

Guide to Resistance Retribution on the PSP

Resistance Retribution sees the franchise's first release on the handheld system after making waves on the PS3. Since this franchise has released on the PlayStation system, it marked one of the best first-person shooter games to have been released. Therefore, fans of the series were delighted with the prospect of Sony Bend bringing the franchise to the PSP via Resistance Retribution.

Resistance Retribution is without a doubt a magnificent game. What makes it work as a whole is not the impressive individual parts, but when they are put together it makes up for a brilliant game – from the storyline, to the main characters, lots of engaging gameplay features, and one of the best multiplayer feature available on the PSP. In fact, Resistance Retribution is one of the high profile releases for the system this year as one of the leading PS3 franchises sets to invade the portable market.

One of the highlights of Resistance Retribution is its very likeable main character – James Grayson. The game is set in a time between the events of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. If you've played this game before, then you might be familiar with the given time frames. Moving over to Grayson, he is a British Marine whom gamers will be playing as in Resistance Retribution. He and a few other fellow soldiers are in the middle of raging war against the Chimera when they come across a Chimeran conversion process, such as when humans are turned into monsters. James Grayson is a three-dimensional character, which makes him all the more real to gamers.

In Resistance Retribution, his main motivation for killing as many Chimeras as he can is in the hopes of finishing them off before they go after him. This motivational factor is evident all throughout the game, which really gets the player involved in his situation as you play along. However, it turns out that his own brother is in the process of becoming an enemy so Grayson had to sacrifice his own brother's life. Eventually, you will witness Grayson take on many different battles in Resistance Retribution and the story only gets deeper and more involved as you move further along. The Maquis will tell Grayson his objectives in Resistance Retribution's missions.

As for the gameplay in Resistance Retribution, there's tons to keep you excited with lots of strong points. Let's begin with the control system, which you might be familiar with if you've played Syphon Filter games before. Sony Bend have incorporated this control scheme but infused them with some key improvements to make the third-person adventure more enticing. To move Grayson towards your desired direction, simply use the analog nub. Meanwhile, the face buttons are used to control his point of view, so you always get the best spot the witness the action. To fire your weapon, tap R button; to switch to your secondary weapon fire, hold the L button; and to hop over or climb onto things, press Down on your D-pad. To choose from your choices of weapon, tap right on your D-pad; however, if you hold it right, the game will pause to showcase your weapon wheel.

Speaking of weapons, you might be interested to find out what weapons you can use to down enemies in Resistance Retribution. With over a dozen types of weapons, each one is integral to help you survive the harsh gaming conditions and tough enemies. If you're going up against the massive Titans, it is best to use the chaingun and movable shield. Meanwhile, shotgun is best in defeating the Leapers. There's also the Razor, which is an energy blaster that is capable of producing secondary fire of charged blades that will wipe out your enemies in one blow. Indeed, you need to employ tactical decisions on which weapons would effectively defeat certain enemies in Resistance Retribution, especially when you are running low on health.

For improved combat skills in Resistance Retribution, an innovative Aim Assist Box is added into the gameplay. A yellow box will appear on-screen as you play, wherein your objective is to get your enemy in the box. Once you've done this, it will automatically bring the crosshairs into your enemy for an accurate shot. This system is introduced to make the game more manageable and to easily defeat enemies. You do have the option to turn it on or off, so it's all your call in Resistance Retribution.

The cover system in Resistance Retribution has been polished as well, which has always been one of the main focus for Sony Bend. In Resistance Retribution, it has been improved to become more effective and help Grayson out in his adventures. As soon as you walk into an object that provides cover, this will cause Grayson to automatically stick to it. But instead of blind firing, Grayson will remain stuck on that object where he took cover from while moving the crosshairs into position. You can fire by tapping or holding the R button.

Resistance Retribution comes with several game levels wherein there are three Skill Point objectives to fulfill for each one. Of course, the objectives for each level vary and you can also expect them to become more difficult as you get deeper into the game. As you play the levels in Resistance Retribution, your aim is to complete these “achievements”. Once you've unlocked all of them, you can have access to any locked files whether music, movies, etc. However, you can only check your Skill Point requirements once you have finished playing through that level, not during play.

The PSP connectivity feature available to Resistance Retribution is one of the highly anticipated features that handheld gamers await in this game. To use this feature, you simply put Resistance 2 on your PS3 system. Head on to the options menu and choose Connect PSP. Using a USB cable and the main menu for Resistance Retribution, you can plug in your PSP into the PS3 to get connected. You will now have two options to choose from on-screen: Infect Resistance Retribution and Activate Resistance Retributions Plus. Now, let's discuss each one.

Infect Resistance Retribution provides a twist into your ordinary Chimera fighting wherein you play as a normal human. This time out, your main character is infected with the same virus that hit Nathan in the console versions of the franchise. In connection with this, Grayson will acquire some new abilities such as the ability to breathe underwater, health meter regeneration, a new Spectre suit, and a magnum. However, if you examine it on a whole, the changes incorporated are very minor.

Resistance Retribution Plus is probably the more exciting versions of the two. This will eventually transfer the PS3 controls over to your handheld system, and vice versa. The controls remain pretty much the same, except for the ability to use the second analog stick to change Grayson's point of view aside from relying mainly on the PSP's face buttons. The biggest change comes in the form of the elimination of the Aim Assist Box, which leaves gamers on their own when it comes to aiming at enemies. You can expect the game's difficulty level to go up, and it renders the game with a feel more like a third-person shooter on the PS3.

The online options for PSP's Resistance Retribution provide both ad hoc and infrastructure mode. The Infrastructure mode enables a maximum of eight players with up to five modes to choose from. The online feature is quite interactive as well with lots of features including voice chat, clans, 12 ranks to aim for, unranked matches, friends list, 22 medals, among others.

There are a total of five game modes in Resistance Retribution's multiplayer options: Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Free For All, Assimilation, and Containment. The first three modes are pretty standard. Meanwhile, Assimilation will begin with one player as a member of the Cloven, while the other players are assigned to the Maquis. Whenever the Clovens kill people, they become assimilated to the Clovens who are defeating the Maquis unit until they are totally phased out. In Containment, the objective for each squad is to capture and hold nodes for as long as they can.

Technically, Resistance Retribution stands out in its musical score. Sony's use of orchestra for the battle scenes reinforces the momeny and produce more thrill out of the entire gaming experience. Not much can be said about the visuals though since it does not impress. The movies do hold its own though, while the characters are better as compared to some other PSP games.

Even if you're not a fan of the Resistance franchise, there's tons to look forward here. The game might not feature the most potent individual features, but when you put them together, they help deliver a compelling gameplay experience with lots of replay value.
