Guide to Phantasy Star Portable on the PSP
Phantasy Star Portable is the latest iteration from a series that has undergone major evolution all throughout its presence in the gaming community. The franchise has seen releases in various consoles but its latest destination is on Sony's handheld system. Phantasy Star Portable is more reminiscent of the Phantasy Star Universe and turns from the traditional RPG system to an action-packed game.
The plot for Phantasy Star Portable is set at a time following the events of PS Universe. As you progress forward in the story, you will be partnered with Viviene, who is a brand new character into the series. You two are sent together on a mission of investigating a possibly life threatening force and you need to work closely together in your missions in Phantasy Star Portable if you want to save the rest of the world from destruction.
One of the stronger points in Phantasy Star Portable is its character creation system. One of the distinctive features about the franchise is their impressive character designs. With Phantasy Star Portable, it takes that a notch further. This game is heavily based on customization and gamers who want to gain more control over their playing experience will truly enjoy this game. Your first objective before moving on to the actual gameplay is to create a character from ground up. The most basic choice concern four different classes; therefore, you can choose from either Human, CAST, Neuman, or Beast. Then, all else is up to you on how you want to customize your character in Phantasy Star Portable, from its hair color, choice of outfit to wear, facial features, and many others.
Phantasy Star Portable consists of a varied gameplay mechanic that will suit just about any type of handheld gamer. Missions for this game are quite basic, such as moving from point A to point B while accomplishing tasks along the way. You will either engage in level grinding, collecting items, crushing enemies, or collecting keys to unlock gates in Phantasy Star Portable. This game indeed is looking more like its predecessor wherein you'd explore large environments that open up your next set of adventures.
Game exploration is another important aspect in Phantasy Star Portable's gameplay. Despite the fact that your missions can become repetitive at times since you will fulfill objectives of the same nature, it never reaches the point of becoming stale. Much credit to the variety of enemy types that you need to contend with, and they are no longer limited to just monsters since there are also humanoid enemies that are more agile and limber. Also, there are unsuspecting items that you can pick up as you continue to explore the different areas in Phantasy Star Portable.
One good aspect about deeply exploring this game is that you will eventually find diverse areas that make exploration more interesting and rewarding. When you unlock new areas, you will find more clothes, armor, items, and weapons that are useful in the game. Aside from continually beefing up your chances during combat or encounter with enemies, you will also be able to update your character's look that makes playing Phantasy Star Portable more fun and worthwhile.
In terms of game modes, Phantasy Star Portable are categorized into two sections: Story mode and Multi mode. Regardless of your choice between the two, you will always go through the character creation system discussed above. Unlike in Universe's story mode wherein you are restricted to a set of characters, Phantasy Star Portable's Story mode enables you to share characters you have customized in either the single-player or multiplayer gaming. However, you need to be aware that the AI in story mode can be disappointing, especially knowing the caliber of franchise that is Phantasy Star.
The battle system is one of the major focus in Phantasy Star Portable. And its combat never disappoints with the action played out in real-time and having full 3D control over the character you play. The addition of an Action Palette in the combat system for Phantasy Star Portable has enabled you to have better control over which weapon you use when fighting a particular enemy. Also, all other weapons in your arsenal are easy to access via the pop-up menu that can be triggered using the Circle button. This new system makes it easier to navigate around the different choices of weapons available for your character to use.
Speaking of weapons, the diversity of choices are one of the strongest points of Phantasy Star Portable. You have a wide assortment of long- and short-range weapons or devices to choose from. There is also some tactical approach used in these weapons during battle since it will depend on which character you use or which enemies you are facing. There is definitely a difference in the experience when you're using a gun during combat, as opposed to a sword. Plus, if you dislike the idea of button-mashing, then the timing-related requirements in Phantasy Star Portable to make combat more challenging yet exciting.
Phantasy Star Portable offers enough satisfying gameplay even when you are playing it solo. However, the multiplayer features offers you more expanded possibilities with an added pool of missions to play. In order to succeed in these missions, you need to work together as a team. The sad thing though with the multiplayer feature of Phantasy Star Portable is that it does not support online multiplayer features. However, it does allow three other players to join you in your missions.
Technically, the 3D visuals and impeccable background stand out as the game's strongest visual features. The voice acting though is in-between – it isn't disappointing but it does not impress either. However, with the level of satisfaction you can derive from the gameplay experience in Phantasy Star Portable, all these would hardly matter anyway.
