Patapon 2 is a Sony PlayStation Portable Action game, written by SCEJ.

Guide to Patapon 2 on the PSP

Patapon 2 has a lot weighing on it as the original release of the franchise is one of the well-known releases for the PSP. Therefore, this new sequel has a huge shoes to fill in, in terms of being able to deliver the same fun and quirky gaming concept that made the first game appeal to fans. As with the challenges of any sequel, developer Studio Japan emphasized on retaining the same gaming formula but squeezing in a variety of new gameplay additions to relive the legacy of this rhythm-based gaming series with Patapon 2.

For fans who have played through the first game, you will find that the first few minutes of playing Patapon 2 feels more like the first game. In fact, several critics believe that Patapon 2 feels more like an upgrade rather than an actual sequel. However, there are a few surprise offerings and interesting gameplay additions, aside from the fact that this game also features a stiff learning curve, so you have to come prepared to lead your army of Patapons.

Playing as the Almighty, you need to lead your team of Patapons to victory against the enemies. To do that, you need to undertake several game missions and objectives by either precisely tapping out rhythms along with the beat before you can advance, attacking or defending yourself from enemies, among others. As you move further into the game, the story will eventually unfold and you will find new Patapon and enemies. What initially appears to be a straightforward and simple rhythm action game in Patapon 2, it eventually turns into a more strategy based game.

After your brief encounter with Patapon 2's first boss, which is a Dodonga, the Hero character is introduced. The addition of Heroes into the game allows more player options since you have the hand at choosing the best formation for a battle, switching between your troops depending on whether you need foot troops, archers, etc, you can also choose which Hero to send. It soon becomes evident that the developers of Patapon 2 are leaning more towards infusing more strategic gameplay mechanics such that even pro Patapon players will grapple their way through the game. It might take a few playing time before you can fully understand the underpinnings of how to handle your army and attain victory.

Your exploration in Patapon 2 will consist of collecting raw materials needed to form new troops, deciding on your army formation, and other complex stuff needed to prepare yourself for battle. Another exciting detail about Patapon 2 is that you are allowed to port any saves you have done from the previous game or other essential gameplay elements. But still, the game objective for Patapon 2 remains quite basic, which is to guide your spear-wielding Patapons from the left side of your screen towards the right following the same drum beat commands.

In terms of the control scheme for Patapon 2, it utilizes the four face buttons for the PSP. Each face button correspond to either one of the four drums, which are “pata”, “pon”, “chaka”, and “don”. For each of these drum beat commands that you tap, it will cause them to execute a given command whether to march, attack, or defend.

One of the main focus for any sequel game such as Patapon 2 is the changes or additions made on the gameplay mechanic. There are minor additions in the game including the bird rider, magician units, robots, and others. However, the highlight of the sequel is the Hero character. The Heroes are larger than average warriors you can find in the game. They prove to be exciting additions for Patapon 2 with their new brand of special attacks. As for other additions or changes in the game, they are infused within the different game levels there is to play.

The combat options in Patapon 2 have been given a boost with the addition attributes such as Speed and Strength. Also, gamers will have the ability to execute special attacks while increasing their ability to block off enemy's special attacks. What makes this quite difficult, especially for new gamers though, is that the new combat system requires more fine-tuning instead of taking a more intuitive approach at the game.

Speaking of combat, the bosses are one of the refreshing aspect about Patapon 2. While it has been established that there are more enemies in this game, the tougher bosses provide a pleasant challenge to the dedicated gamers of the series. Instead of merely recycling bosses from the original game, Patapon 2's bosses is a breath of fresh air and makes this game real exciting.

The Fever Mode in Patapon 2 is built around the execution of combos. For the extra hero setting, gamers are required to precisely hit four beats in a given sequence before they can execute a special attack. You need to succeed in doing this in order to enter Fever mode with your hero equipped with advanced combat skills and abilities. The precision requirement for the Fever mode in Patapon 2 is in line with the game's quest to produce a more deliberate game around the original concept.

Another interesting twist to the game comes in the form of the Evolution Tree, which adds depth to the game's leveling system. It comes with a complex-looking screen where you can convert collected spoils into money in order to upgrade your warriors into a fiercer fighter during battle.

Adding another level of depth into the gameplay system for Patapon 2 is the multiplayer options for the game. Here, you can team up with as much as three other players where you can play through special multiplayer levels and fight against boss characters. If you and your team succeeds, you can earn rewards for it that can in turn to be used to develop more powerful Patapons. If you can't find any friends to play with, you can assign the three other characters for AI control. Still in conjunction with the addition of the Heroes is the ability to use other Heroes to form your team in playing through the multiplayer mode. Offering some diversion from the main gameplay are up to seven choices of mini-games for Patapon 2. You can expect these to offer more shallow challenges, but still it provides the same fun playing experience.

As far as technical matters go, Patapon 2 is undoubtedly one of the downright beautiful PSP games in existence. It has a unique graphic design that suits the game's concept really well. Plus, the music is quite infectious, which you might say is required for a rhythm-based game, but it does reinforce the level of satisfaction you can get from playing Patapon 2.

While some critics might believe it is a far-cry from the original game, Patapon 2 does deliver a few exciting surprises that will have gamers wanting to hold on to this game for a while. If you're looking for some challenge to add to the fun appeal of this game, then new and old gamers will have something common to dab on.
