Guide to N+ on the PSP
N+ began its existence as a free flash game called N on the web. The concept is very simple: guide your character to the exit door as quickly as possible while avoiding various hazards. Atari has since added in a number of enhancements to bring to us the game we show you now. I was fortunate enough to get a near-final version of the game for this preview- a full review can be expected once i receive the full retail version.
As mentioned, the concept is your basic platformer/ puzzle game, racing the clock to the levels exit. This is where the simplicity ends- some of the levels can be quite complicated and one must be as agile as your ninja character to successfully finish a stage in the game. You have several moves at your disposal- besides being able to run and jump, you can slide down walls and wall jump to make your way back up. Building momentum also plays a part- with enough speed you can jump to the other side of a level within 2 long jumps. You will need every bit of the agility. Among the hazards in N+ are falls, mines, lasers, guided missiles, pods that are electrified or have machine guns built in as well as devices triggered when you reach a certain level. In some cases the hazards will scatter your ninja into teeny pieces all over the level with a somewhat satisfying splattering sound. Some of the rooms have an almost insane amount of difficulty to them so expect to have a number of retries in some cases.
You aren't just playing against the obstacles- time is not your friend either. As you make your way through, your potential score is ticking down. Fortunately, there are gold coins throughout the levels that will help you regain many of these lost points when collected.
Well over 300 levels await you in the single player mode (you start with several levels with more being unlocked as you progress), along with 150 multiplayer levels. A number of other unlockables are available such as being able to change your ninja's color, victory animations and music. On top of that, the game also has a level editor which allows you to design a level yourself and upload it to a server for other N+ gamers to check out. This makes for a potentially endless array of levels to play. The Community feature that this is in was not available with the preview copy but should be up and running once the game is released.
Graphically, the game keeps it's somewhat simple roots but this fits perfectly for the game type. The complexity of the gameplay more than makes up for this basic look. The music is similarly plain but still compliments the overall package.
The kicker that puts this game into the "must have" category for those into puzzle games is the price- N+ will be available for a mere USD $19.99 when it gets released on August 12. If you are looking for an inexpensive game to satisfy that "pick up and play" urge this is definitely one to check out!
