Motorstorm Arctic Edge is a Sony PlayStation Portable Racing game, written by Bigbig Studios.

Guide to Motorstorm Arctic Edge on the PSP

MotorStorm Arctic Edge is the third installment in this popular racing franchise for Sony's PlayStation system and yet this title marks the debut of the franchise on the handheld. With well reputed developer BigBig taking over the reins on this one, you can rest assured that they know exactly what the PSP gamers want given that they've delivered successful hits on the said portable console. But working on MotorStorm Arctic Edge can undeniably be quite a tough challenge knowing that it isn't exactly at par with the likes of Gran Turismo, so this one is in for a tough competition to get the gamers' attention. However, what both Sony and BigBig are hoping to achieve with this new franchise release is to reignite the enthusiasm of handheld gamers for thrilling racing action, especially for off-road racing.

It would be completely unfair to compare MotorStorm Arctic Edge over its big console counterparts. After all, there is a major difference in terms of hardware capacity but its developers have been able to successfully maximize that to bring roaring machines and racing vehicles in rough-and-tumble type of racing experience. With an Arctic setting, MotorStorm Arctic Edge opens up a lot of opportunities gameplay-wise, such as open-air courses and a mayhem of competitive vehicles.

The single player experience in MotorStorm Arctic Edge delivers enough features to tinker over even when you do not have company for the night. A nice compliment to the experience is the addition of a new “wreckreation” mode in the game, wherein you have the choice to participate in a time attack. When you do, you must upload and download ghosts of other people. A more liberated approach to this game also comes in the form of the Free Play, wherein you can choose your own track, adjust the number of laps for the race, what vehicle class to use, and just about anything to tweak the experience in racing with MotorStorm Arctic Edge's Free Play feature to suit your own idea of what a thrilling race should be like.

A Festival Career Mode in MotorStorm Arctic Edge is one of the major drawing points in this game. There are as much a a hundred events to compete in, with 12 courses to choose from and all set in the Alaskan wasteland. You can basically pick up whichever vehicle you desire and race them around perilous courses to show your opponents just what you are made of. Speaking of racing events, there are lots waiting to be unlocked in MotorStorm Arctic Edge, which follow an ascending spiral based on the eight ranks. There are also invitational events that you can join, giving you the opportunity to compete with racers belonging in the same rank as yours. You will be awarded with corresponding points for each performance in these races. If you manage to place among the top three racers, you can earn points and unlock the next tier until you reached a certain amount of points.

There are also objective-based events in MotorStorm Arctic Edge that hopes to mix things up and infuse more variety into your usual choices. For instance, there is Time Ticker, which is a new addition into the franchise. This is a welcome change from the norm such that you can continue racking up points that are impacted by your respective race position. If you managed to reach 999 points, you automatically win the event. This is somewhat patterned after the Eliminator Mode with the only difference being that players continue to rack up points as the race continues, instead of being eliminated with each lap in this event for MotorStorm Arctic Edge. Another event that you could check out is blandly called Speed Events, which are basically solo checkpoints that you need to dash through.

Given that a lot of the racing events in MotorStorm Arctic Edge rely on points, it is important to delve deeper into this point system for the game. Whatever points you have earned throughout all the races you've competed in, it will add up to your overall rank. You can also earn stars for winning certain races or events, which you can use to unlock bonuses. To offer motivation to gamers, the developers have added Trophy-style badges into MotorStorm Arctic Edge for corresponding game achievements earned.

The vehicles classes are one of the most important features in MotorStorm Arctic Edge, as with any other racing titles. For this one, you can get up to eight vehicle classes to use with three models for each class. Given the unique setting for this game, these vehicles are appropriately designed to suit the frosty atmosphere in MotorStorm Arctic Edge. It is therefore exciting to test such vehicles as snowmobiles, snow ploughs, Snowcat, Snow Machine and the like to replace your typical racing vehicles. These vehicles are exclusive to the Arctic setting, although you can still get the usual vehicles choices such as ATV, Bike, Rally Car, Buggy, and the Big Rig. For most of the game modes, you are given the liberty to pick the vehicle you want to race in. Only during the Festival Mode are you restricted in your vehicle selection capacity.

All of these vehicles in MotorStorm Arctic Edge have thankfully a distinctive feel, which suits the controls of the PSP. You will therefore notice that the smaller and more agile vehicles easily cruise on the handheld, while the bigger vehicles might need a bit more momentum given that their mass make navigation quite a task. Rally cars are the most tricky though, especially during the start due to their tendency to oversteer, but you have to make subtle adjustments to get right back on track.

The racing tracks available to this game have their own unique charm in the game, such that you will tend to appreciate them more as you go further along into your racing escapades. Most of them emit this patchwork feeling, wherein you can get a good mix of sludgy valleys, banked turns, and winding tunnels all throughout your play. But one thing you can expect with the courses in MotorStorm Arctic Edge is variety. There are 12 tracks available and each one are divided into four zones each. But knowing that this game is set in the Arctic, there is a lot of focus on snow and ice in most of the courses. This therefore offers more treacherous courses and difficult terrains to overcome for the racers.

Once you are done with the single player campaign, you can hop on over to join the multiplayer competition in MotorStorm Arctic Edge. There is support for both infrastructure and ad hoc multiplayer, which provides support for a maximum of six players. Having to compete with real people through various races in multiplayer should provide a huge relief from the forgiving AI opponents during the single race experience, something of which the franchise has been long known for.

With MotorStorm Arctic Edge intending to break the ice on the PSP, loyal fans of the franchise should be pleased to learn that this title offers a lot of fidelity into the original reputation of the franchise. It has managed to maintain the same feel and allure that has enamored fans to the first two games off the popular franchise and yet it has tossed in enough amount of innovative features to define the PSP experience instead of merely being handed over something that fans have played before.
