Lunar Silver Star Harmony is a Sony PlayStation Portable Strategy RPG game, written by Game Arts.

Guide to Lunar Silver Star Harmony on the PSP

Lunar Silver Star Harmony is the latest attempt to re-tell to modern gamers one of the best RPG stories ever created in video game history. There have been several remakes of the game in the past since it was first released on the Sega CD about 18 years ago and yet it has retained its classic feel and look that endeared the game to its fans. But more than just a reiteration of the same game that was played by PSOne gamers before, Lunar Silver Star Harmony is the perfect entry point to the series. It is a nice way to go back at the series' actual beginning and experience the characters that breathe life to this story once again.

GameArts is tapped to develop Lunar Silver Star Harmony on the PSP while XSeed Games will publish it in North America. As the game heads to the PlayStation Portable, the undeniable challenge in the task is present each step of the way. After all, this is one of the most widely acclaimed RPG franchises of its time. Prior to the release of Lunar Silver Star Harmony, which is the latest version for the PSP, its most recent remake was released way back in 2002. Aside from the new name, there are lots of enhancements, upgrades, and other such developments done to give it a new look while still retaining the old glory of the franchise.

Lunar Silver Star Harmony is set in a fictional and fantastical world of Lunar, wherein its inhabitants called Silver Star, reside in a cold environment. One of these inhabitants is a young boy named Alex, who dreams of becoming a dragon master, like his hero Dyne. But in a strange twist of fate, little did Alex realize that one trip to a nearby cave will place him right where he wants to be – that is becoming a dragon master himself. A nice touch about the storytelling element with Lunar Silver Star Harmony is its ability to offer a complete sense of what the game world is about. For instance, it comes with a new prologue feature that provides gamers with a background on essential elements of the story. This is where you can watch the legend of Dyne, wherein he rescues a goddess from destruction. It provides you some insight into the character of Dyne as a hero and why Alex looks up to him in the first place. Therefore, Lunar Silver Star Harmony does an excellent job of immersing the player into the character's desires and motives instead of tossing them to the game world completely clueless of what drives the character forward.

As an RPG, you can expect Lunar Silver Star Harmony's gameplay to be pretty basic RPG. If you have played the original game, then you should have no trouble grasping the basic gameplay elements. Hardcore RPG fans will be right at home with its old-school turn based RPG battle system and lots of exploration to be done.

More on these elements later, for now focus must be turned to the menu system in the PSP version of Lunar Silver Star Harmony. Unlike previous games wherein the menu system was too cluttered to be figured out, this new version's menu have been redesigned to make it more organized and follows an icon-driven format. Press the Triangle button to pull up the menu screen, so you can perform basic commands and functions. But this icon-driven format is not limited to the menu as it also extends to the battle sequences in Lunar Silver Star Harmony.

The exploration aspect in Lunar Silver Star Harmony also offers some of the most exciting elements in the game, which has eventually led to Alex's discovery about the possibility of following his hero's path to become a dragonmaster himself. In comparison to the earlier versions of the game, the towns and dungeons do not just feel smaller, but they have in fact been reduced in expanse. Your time is therefore spent on exploring these various towns and other such locations in Lunar Silver Star Harmony instead of wandering aimlessly around without a single clue as to where you're headed to next. Through your explorations, you will also get to meet your allies in the game, namely Jessica, Kyle, Nash, Mia, among others. If you want to skip all the adventures of navigating one town after another, you can utilize the “Fast Travel” feature in the game. With this, you can simply choose a destination and you can easily get there in a click of a button.

Incorporating additions and other enhancements to PSP's Lunar Silver Star Harmony was probably one of the trickiest part in developing the game. Developers needed to practice the freedom in coming up with a new concept for the game to bring it a fresh appeal without losing the “Lunar feel” that was a staple for the franchise. The graphics is undeniably one of the most evident enhancement that was done to the game, which is completely re-worked to suit the PSP's widescreen format. Even the character art that goes along with the dialogue in Lunar Silver Star Harmony has been made over, as well. All aspects of the graphics – from the character sprites, to the environment details, and the anime cutscenes – have a more commendable brightness and contrast to them. All in all, the graphics looked like how you would expect a Lunar game to be like, only with a modern twist.

The soundtrack has also been remastered, which is a welcome relief for loyal fans of the franchise knowing that the original PSOne game had some quality issues with the instrumentation. Composer Noriyuki Iwadare has come up with original compositions for Lunar Silver Star Harmony to suit the overhauled graphics for the game. This was a crucial aspect of the game to look into as it is more than just an element to reinforce the gaming experience, but is actually part of the gaming experience and the plot. The inclusion of voice acting during cutscenes have also been retained for the PSP remake since it is one of the series' claim to fame.

Aside from the graphic and audio enhancements, the expanded battle system in Lunar Silver Star Harmony is another noteworthy feature of the game. Gone are the random battles, which is part of the old RPG cliché. Instead, you can now see enemy sprites on-screen to produce a more tactical approach to your combat. It is now possible to avoid dangerous monsters when you spot them, instead of being forced in an encounter with them. The Arts Gauge system is back since first introduced in Lunar Legend, which enable gamers to unleash devastating attacks or heal other members of their party. Thus, it creates another dimension to your combat experience, aside from being used as a tactical element.

Several RPGs have come and gone but probably not too many as memorable as this coming of age story. Once you get the opportunity to sample Lunar Silver Star Harmony on the PSP, it wouldn't be too hard to see how this has managed to endure over several years yet it still continues to inflict its charm onto its loyal gamers.
