LittleBigPlanet is a Sony PlayStation Portable Platform game, written by Media Molecule.

Guide to LittleBigPlanet on the PSP

LittleBigPlanet is without a doubt one of the most innovative game concepts in the recent times and it wouldn't be named Game of the Year for nothing. And since the franchise first came out, it has found a home in the PS3 but Media Molecule wanted to offer an on-the-go playing experience with LittleBigPlanet such that th concept of delivering a handheld version was innovated. Not only will this give non-PS3 owners the opportunity to experience the game, but you have more opportunities to play it as well.

Although Media Molecule was the original development team that handled the PS3 version of LittleBigPlanet, they will get additional support from SCE Cambridge for the development of the handheld version. The whole idea that is working behind the development of the PSP version was basically to not just translate the PS3 gaming experience into the handheld system but also to establish an entirely different gaming experience. Thus, LittleBigPlanet for the PSP never feels like a mere shrunken version of its next-gen counterpart, especially since the developers have done an excellent job of making this game feel as big as the first title.

As with any other sequels, LittleBigPlanet for the PSP carries the essence of the original release. You will find a lot of familiar features, lots of character customization abilities, level creation, the same approach to the graphics with a hand-crafted effect, and the fundamental gameplay mechanics. In addition, this new LittleBigPlanet version even tries to address (and have succeeded in doing so) some issues that were present on the PS3 version. But the development process was not all smooth sailing since it was a big challenge in itself to render all the platforming action on the tiny PSP screen, especially since this game was designed to shine on a wide HD screen. There has to be a lot of adjustment to be done to avoid making this new game feel like an inferior version of the original.

For the most part during your gameplay experience in LittleBigPlanet, players will run, jump, grab, or basically do anything it takes to get from one point to another while trying to collect various items, such as bubbles, stickers, costumes, and all sorts of goodies found in the game world. With a lot of in-game activities involved, of course the controls aspect was another major issue that the developers had to confront with in developing LittleBigPlanet for the PSP. One noticeable difference is the reduced number of buttons available but the developers have done the best job possible to make this transition as smooth as possible. In fact, you can navigate through the thumbstick and main buttons with ease to execute basic to complex moves in the game.

The level creator on the PSP version of LittleBigPlanet might not be as efficient nor as extensive as the one in PS3, but it still delivers. The reduced number of buttons for the controller makes the level creation a bit daunting but it is still manageable enough not to destroy the entire experience and fun that one can get from it. You can then use the level creator to design or customize new levels or puzzles in LittleBigPlanet. To provide additional motivation for customizing your own levels is the ability to upload your creations to the network wherein other gamers can access it and download for their own playing time. But if you are too lazy or simply hates the intricacy of the process, then you can also head to the network and find levels created by other gamers.

Even without the level creator, there are enough level choices in LittleBigPlanet that you can explore to consist majority of your playing time. There are over 35 new levels introduced in the game which have been designed specifically to deliver the same authentic menu interface and some new worlds worth exploring. To offer a more customized playing experience, you can also use the stickers you have collected along the way to customize these levels or open up new paths for more areas to explore. The best thing about these levels featured in LittleBigPlanet is that all feels original and intuitive to offer a good mix of challenge and fun. If that's not enough, you can add into the mix exciting new locations such as Australia, China, Egypt, Switzerland, and many more.

The side scrolling action for LittleBigPlanet on the PSP has been reduced into two dimensions: background and foreground. However, there is still enough depth into the side scrolling action to make it exciting from start to finish. You still have the ability to navigate the environments, look around your environment to potentially unlock secret areas. It all jives well with the hyper-sensitive buttons such that getting your characters to execute basic action can prove to be quite easy. The same level of ease can be experienced during combat action in LittleBigPlanet to produce a free-flowing action.

Sadly though, you might have to explore on these gameplay opportunities solo as the developers have decided to completely drop the multiplayer feature from the PSP version of LittleBigPlanet to avoid lagging issues. In an effort to provide a smooth and free-flowing pace that is characteristic of what the franchise is about, the developers had to make that decision and they support their decision to leave that off for this installment. If you were to compare the PS3 version of LittleBigPlanet versus the handheld system version, this one would certainly come out as one of the major differences.

While it might be unfair to compare the graphics of LittleBigPlanet for the PSP against the PS3 version, the former does hold up well against its big brother. The level of detail and texture is vividly done and emits the same look and feel that fans have come to love from the PS3 version. As long as you have learned to appreciate the game for what it is and omit the comparison from the first title, then you can unlock a massive potential here. In addition, LittleBigPlanet features a commendable soundtrack that fit the game nicely. You might even recognize some of the sound effects here from that of the PS3 version and Stephen Fry is back yet again to do the narrating duties for the handheld version.

Although LittleBigPlanet is not sure to have established a new home in the PSP system, it does offer a whole new perspective to the franchise such that you can enjoy portable sessions and nothing can stop you from embarking on an adventure with your sackboys. Just like the same old charm delivered by the original title, it won't be long until you got hooked on LittleBigPlanet for the PSP as well.
