Guide to Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce on the PSP
Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce is looking to break the monotonous chain of DW titles who have become seemingly carbon copies of one another. Even the latest release prior to Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce, which was Gundam, tried to infuse some new incorporations and add variety into the series only to fail. This latest game off the franchise isn't just innovating in terms of gameplay, but Koei is taking a major leap by doing that in the Sony handheld instead of the next-gen console.
Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce asks you to forget everything you previously knew about the series since it is bringing forth an entirely new gameplay experience. Even in the early build of the game and more light had been shed on this new PSP title, it is definitely looking like it has undergone a massive upgrade and revamping. The core foundation for the series remains intact for Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce so it will still employ the third-person, hack n' slash type of action. Since the franchise has reaped major success in Japan, Koei has high hopes for Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce's ability to bring in Western gamers as well.
The plot for Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce divides the overall game world into three kingdoms. The first decisions you'd have to make as soon as you start playing is the particular kingdom in which you are going to stage your adventure and the warrior whom you'll be controlling. If you've played any past games from the franchise, then you should be familiar with some of the faces that will reappear as warriors in this game. However, the good thing about playing returning warriors such as Zhao Yun or Lu Bu is that you'd have more freedom in controlling them with this one, which we will discuss further later.
After you have chosen a kingdom and warrior to play, you will start off at a village that will serve as your hub. Then, you will be noted about any quests that you must embark on via the notice board or through instructions from the gatekeeper. Here, you can access just about any item you need for your upcoming adventure, such as a store house, blacksmith, academy, workshop, etc. Your objective for Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce will be to complete quests you are assigned with and you will ultimately level up and progress further. Some parts of the city are upgradeable too and all you need is the office cards provided by the visitors. Simply head over to the menu and find the city upgrade option. Once you find the slots reserved for a specific town, you can use the card to level up that given area.
One of the most exciting aspects of Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce is the level design that offers multi-tiered levels to break the monotonous bore of repetitive levels. For a long-standing franchise such as this, it is good to stick with the standard gameplay format but once gamers have had their hands on it for several years, it is only fitting to offer some diversions. Another notable change in the level design comes in the form of the areas there is to explore in Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce since they are comparably smaller than anything gamers had seen in past DW games. However, it offers an opportunity to build on a more concentrated area for battlefield, which really emphasizes the new approach used in this game.
Even the missions for Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce have been downsized, so they are generally shorter as compared to the missions you've played in the console versions. But that is not to say that the quality of the experience shrunk as well. In fact, the timed-missions that typically runs up to 15 minutes help the game prorgess much further instead of the seemingly dragging 60-minutes of the previous versions. You can now complete quests and move on to the next in a rapid succession that never leaves a single dull moment of your playing time.
This new focus on precision action is also evident with the characters and their skills or abilities. If you remember playing previous DW games, you might have been familiar with the particular type of weapon restricted to a given warrior or character. In the past, for example, playable characters are restricted to a single weapon choice, which they are often most recognized for. But with Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce's revamped system, players can pick up any weapon throughout the game that enables them to fight enemies more efficiently. What's even better is that you can automatically switch to a secondary weapon in the middle of combat if you find that your initial choice of weapon is not doing enough damage on your enemy. In fact, you can choose from up 250 available weapons and you surely wouldn't run out of the deadliest weapon to finish off your enemy in a brief span of time. Brilliant, isn't it?
If that's not impressive enough for action gamers who've got their hands on just about any type of weapon for combat, what about unleashing your fury from up above? Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce literally takes the action to a whole new level by enabling gamers to send combos down to their enemies while hovering above them. When you combine this with their new ability to switch from a massive arsenal of weapons, it really does intrigue any hardcore action gamers.
Still on the combat department, the developers of Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce have opted to omit the Musou gauge. Instead, it is replaced by a Fury gauge, which has the basic core features of the Musou feature that requires you to fill up the gauge so you can unleash more powerful and devastating attack. But Fury gauge does not limit you to unleashing a powerful combo but enable gamers to transform into a new state that ultimately boosts your character's statistics and abilities. This new incorporation in the combat system has definitely transformed the overall feel of this game, not just combat-wise.
Using the PSP's Ad-hoc option also enable handheld gamers to tap three other friends to play together in Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce's multiplayer system. As with the single-player experience, the multiplayer engages you in a riveting action as you plow through various multiplayer missions. Teamwork is crucial when playing with friends in multiplayer since the enemies have noticeably improved AI.
Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce is not one to leave out its technical features though. The game's visual design is arguably one of the franchise's best, especially in terms of the animated cutscenes. The environments, although not quite as big as previous games, retain the same realistic appeal to them that enable the characters come to life. The enemies might need to be given more attention to such that they do not like exactly like one another, but the playable characters themselves were quite well-designed and with luxurious wardrobe to style them up before heading for battle. It boasts off an impressive soundtrack too, further emphasizing the intense level of action present in the game.
Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce is redefining the entire franchise with a revamped gameplay system and a new platform. With these enhancements, Koei and Omega Force are depending on the game's ability to finally penetrate the Western gamers and see why this series has continually dominated Japan over the years.
