As for the combat, it is quite similar to the console version of Dante's Inferno, which is still impressive knowing how satisfying this system is. The combat ploy is a bit tight such that you need to cycle through the Circle, Triangle, and Square buttons to eliminate the damned and twisted soul of your enemies. You also have a good mix of light and heavy attacks in Dante's Inferno, which you can string together for a powerful combo. If combos don't appeal much to you, then maybe you will delight with the gory and violent imagery of the game's brutal finishing moves. Overall, the combat is not entirely astounding but the scenarios at which your character is held at in the game can often be shocking.
Needless to say, the difficulty level in Dante's Inferno can be a bit too high. A huge variety of enemy classes are equipped with unique abilities that often gang up on Dante within a matter of seconds. This also explains why evading your enemies is often a smarter move to make. In addition, you are equipped with magical attacks, powerful weapons, and extreme abilities or use ranged attacks to cause them damage, so you need to fully max these out when trying to overcome various enemy classes in Dante's Inferno.
The character models in the PSP version of Dante's Inferno admittedly need some more polish, but the environments and its successful re-imagining of hell emits a unique and twisted but nevertheless memorable atmosphere. It is still quite a few levels behind the prominence of God of War, but it is nearly there. And when you toss in vicious sound effects that further reinforce the idea of hell in this game world, with appropriate use of sound effects can really kick things into high hear. And with that, Dante's Inferno succeeds in bringing the poem into life, only in a more darker tone than the original source material.
Dante's Inferno features a compelling gameplay and a breathtaking action that redefines the action game genre for the PSP. Thus, it simply goes to show that derivation is not always a bad idea, especially with this game's ability conjure a fresh new take on a classic idea.
